e-Twinnig – “Holidays without borders”

Christmas Eve and Christmas with my family

Decorating the Christmas tree has been a tradition in my family for years. Every morning  on the 24th of December the whole family gathers at my grandma’s to decorate the tree, but my only sister and I go and pick the moss for the nativity scene. We put the ornaments on, string lights and everything, all while eating grandma’s fresh homemade cookies. We always have lunch at my geandma’s. My uncle, and, and cousins join us as well. Grandma turns into Jaime Oliver and prepares a royal four course lunch. For starters we always eat fresh salad and cheese platter with prosciutto and ham. Then we have soup. Ater that comes cod fish with potatoes anc carrots. For dessert grandma usually makes strawberry meringue cake or cheesecake. After lunch we talk, have fun, play board games or go for a walk. It is custom in Vela Luka that children go singing Christmas carols around the town. I usually go with my friends, there is a big group of was, around 10 kids. We go all over the town. We usually start around 6 p.m. and come back home around 9.30 p.m. If it’s not too cold we sometimes go to the park to check out the advent hut, but if it is we go back home to wait for Christmas with their family.

Christmas is one of the most beautiful holidays of the year for me because I spend it with my family. That day is always filled with joy, love, and togetherness. In the morning, we all wake up early and open our Christmas presents together. We are all happy and excited as we look at what we received. After that, we get ready for the mass, to which we go together to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. For lunch, we go to my grandma’s. The whole family gathers there – my uncle, aunt, and cousins. Grandma always prepares a lot of delicious food, and we sit at the big table and talk. After lunch, we exchange the rest of the presents, and we have fun because the most important because the most important thing is that we are together. In the afternoon we go to visit my other grandma. There we also hang out for a while, talk and wish each other a merry Christmas. – Ivana, 8.b

My usual Christmas

Every year me and my family celebrate Christmas. We can’t wait for Christmas and the holidays. We wait with excitement. It’s the time when the whole family gathers around the table. We decorate the Christmas tree about two weeks before Christmas. On Christmas Eve we stay up late and go to midnight mass. On Christmas we get up early, open our presents, and have a family breakfast. For lunch we usually go to my grandmother’s and we eat smoked cod, everyone but my dad and me. I don’t like smoked cod just like my dad and that’s why we eat squid. That tradition started when I was born. In the evening we have dinner, watch some films and go to sleep. We are thankful for being able to celebrate Christmas togehter. – Petar, 8.b

My Christmas

On Christmas Eve my cousin comes to out house to celebrate Christmas. We always eat cod on Christmas Eve. In the afternoon we make cake and cookies. My grandma makes most of the cookies, but my mom and my aunt help her. My cousin and I hang out with my friends before dinner. For dinner we all gather and eat. My cousin and I make pancakes for dessert. We play the rest of the evening while adults go to church. In the morning my cousin and my sister wake me up to open our present, but we wait for everyone to wake up and opet them togehter. We go to church together, as well. Lunch is always delicious, after we have cookies and cake. We spend the rest of the day together. – Dora, 8.b
